The Status of Knowledge in the Light of the Quran and Sunnah

The first and foremost foundation of Islamic philosophy is 'Ilm' or knowledge. The very first message revealed to the Messenger of Allah, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), as a guide for the liberation of humanity from the Lord of the Worlds was— اِقْرَاْ (Read). Islam and knowledge are inseparable parts of each other. Without knowledge, it is impossible to correctly follow Islam and attain well-being in this world and the hereafter.

Studying religious knowledge is primarily divided into two parts:

1. Obligatory Law: It is individually obligatory for every Muslim to acquire fundamental knowledge related to faith, prayer, fasting, transactions, and moral purity. It has been stated in the Hadith:

طَلَبُ الْعِلْمِ فَرِيضَةٌ عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ

(Meaning: It is obligatory for every Muslim to seek knowledge. —Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith: 224)

2. Fard Kifayah: It is collectively obligatory to acquire knowledge of the deep and subtle issues of the religion and the scholarship of the Quran and Sunnah. In the words of the Tabi'i Umar ibn Abdul Aziz (may Allah be pleased with him) — "A person who acts without knowledge does more harm than good."

ইলমের মর্যাদা

Allah Ta'ala has taught His Prophet the prayer for the increase of knowledge instead of teaching him a prayer for the increase of worldly wealth:

رَبِّ زِدْنِیْ عِلْمًا

(Translation: O my Lord! Increase me in knowledge. —Surah Taha: 114)

The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, has said regarding the virtue of knowledge:

مَنْ سَلَكَ طَرِيقًا يَلْتَمِسُ فِيهِ عِلْمًا، سَهّلَ اللهُ لَهُ بِهِ طَرِيقًا إِلَى الْجَنّةِ

(Meaning: Whoever embarks on a path to seek knowledge, Allah will make the path to Paradise easy for him because of it. —Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2699)

إِنّ الْعُلَمَاءَ وَرَثَةُ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ

(Translation: Indeed, the scholars are the heirs of the prophets. —Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith: 3641)
